With the release of Way of the Force so close to the Edmond Unplugged Store Championship, I knew I had to find a deck fast. On a constant quest to prove to Eric Wainright that Anakin is actually awesome, I started with an Anakin and double Executioner deck. It only took a few games for me to realize that I was not going to be a able to get that deck to a competitive level before the event...

So, I pivoted to Kylo 2 and Anakin. I tested the deck extensively ahead of the Adepticon Galactic Qualifier, so I felt like if I could get any deck in fighting shape before the event it was likely to be that one. With the addition of cards like Dagger of Mortis and Undermine, I at least knew the deck wouldn't get worse!

As much as I love Dagger of Mortis, my favorite addition to the deck was Undermine. This let me include a mini blanks package, something that wasn't really possible before Way of the Force. This led me to cards like Force Jump and Triple Threat, as well as revisiting Your Skills Are Complete.

The next most important addition was Lack of Faith. While it was basically blank against Gungans and Hero Vehicles, it single handedly turned the tide in my top 4 games against Zeb and Yoda. It also proved useful earlier in the day against two Kylo Snoke decks. Removing both Kylo dice on an early turn slowed them down enough to basically end the game.

If I could go back and do it all again, there are a few changes I would make to the deck:

  1. Character dice manipulation – Six of my control cards manipulate character dice. While that is somewhat hard to avoid with a mono blue villain deck, some minor tweaks could have made my control more consistent. Against decks like hero vehicles or Gungans though, these cards become nearly unplayable. I would likely drop Triple Threat for other control cards, as it was consitently the card I really never made great use of it.

  2. Force Wave – I did not see Force Wave in either of my finals games against Steven’s Gungans and I am pretty sure you have to see it to win that match. This card is too critical for this deck to to overcome wider decks not to include two copies.

  3. Torment – I love this card more than I should and it still did not make it into my deck. After seeing it played, this card is incredible in Trilogies. Most opponents will want to focus down Kylo, so his 12 health makes this a near auto include. You will likely get to use it two or three times and if you can upgrade over it into a redeploy upgrade before he is defeated it brings immense value to the table.

If you are like a lot of players at the event, you might be wondering why I didn't play Snoke with Kylo. Simply put, it is because I think Anakin is better. Before you start calling me a heretic, check out my blog Is Snoke Overrated? for my full run down!

Looks good! I'm building a Kylo/Anakin for my younger brother. What would you swap out for the WotF cards? It hasn't been released in Australia yet, and buying singles from America is crazily expensive once shipping is included. Where did you get resources from, and how often did you find yourself incapable of playing a card, due to it's cost? Sorry for the barrage of questions...

@Hessian Sack there are only 8 cards in the deck from Way of the Force, so it's not that difficult to manage! I believe my previous iteration had these cards instead:

Force Jump -> Stun Baton Lack of Faith -> I Am Your Father Undermine -> 1 x Double Strike and 1 x Alter Triple Threat -> 1 x Maul's Lightsaber, 1 x Frighten

I would say I had a lot of cards I couldn't play often. That is kind of the nature of one set trilogies though, especially going a single color. You understand that a few cards a turn are for re-rolls and then you have the option each turn of which cards to play.

@zachbunn Nice! I'll be posting my budget version soonish. I really enjoyed both your and Steven's articles, and the most recent Podcast. You didn't mention what you'd swap for Dagger of Mortis? How did The Force Is With Me perform? I'm not really keen on it. And Dark Counsel is mainly for focus sides, right? Final question: what has been your best card draw (at the beginning of the game) so far?

@Hessian Sack I would have to look, but probably a second Maul's Lightsaber for Dagger. The Force is With Me is really strong in Trilogies. While it is not great against other Melee decks, most decks have indirect in them. It is particularly necessary against vehicle decks. As far as Dark Counsel, all the sides are great! Focus is good, but so is the card draw and resource. I generally play it early and overwrite it with a 3-cost later.

Oh snap. I used your decklist as inspiration to try and beat the ever-loving midichlorians out of my husband's Obi-Wan (sometimes Qui-Gon or Yoda) and Rey deck. (It's a work in progress; we've only played once and he still beat me.) He loves the Team Covenant podcast and I just put 2 + 2 together with the comment about Gungan deck (the only podcast he's insisted I listen to...WHILE I was building off of your deck to trounce him).

Maybe the Force is with me, after all. ^_^

@VelvetKey that is awesome! Let me know if you have any questions or need any help. Happy to help a fellow Sith destroy the Jedi! :D

@zachbunn My deck lacks sufficient upgrades for 2 Force characters, but even with Jedi Rival as my only upgrade for most of the game (all the lightsabers got buried somehow), I wiped Rey off the field before he could take down Kylo. He definitely has me pinned down with superior upgrade power but I have quite a bit of shield-stripping stuff going on. I think I might sub in another Witch Magick for The Force is With Me, since the only thing I did with those was discard to reroll. I was able to mitigate most of his better rolls with Defends.

If I had drawn a little better, I might have had him.
