I decided to go old school with a deck that has fallen out of favor as of late and use my old eL3-37/Double Engineer/Fast Caster deck.

With everyone teching in vehicle hate, people were really scared to bring this one, but I felt my deck was uniquely positioned to deal with it. And, to my credit, it was! The entire day, I didn't once get blown out with a Vandalize, a Surgical Strike, an N-1 Starfighter or EMP Grenades, and that wasn't for lack of trying.

What my deck couldn't deal with was a combination of horrible luck and even worse play by yours truly. With a little more prep (testing against Snoke/Tarkin) and a more level head, I think this deck has the stuff to compete for and in the top-8 of this meta.

Game 1:

Played against a fellow Bellinghamster who was running a Tobias Beckett - Thief For Hire/Ciena Ree - Adept Pilot/Armored Reinforcement deck.

The game started out pretty well for me. I round-one played Scruffy Looking Nerf-Herder to snipe the one mod he had. This forced him to pivot to the Umbaran Hover Tank instead.

I had a pretty bad misplay in the second to last round. I forgot to wait out Beckett Power action, which would have given me the resource needed to heal my engineer by two.

Also, Kevin had some inspired play. I put out an early Shield Generator, because I know he runs Vandalize. So instead of banging his head against a wall, he used 2 vandalizes, one on an R2 Astromech and the other on L3-37 - Droid Revolutionary herself. That was amazing.

It ultimately came down to the last round. I played Attack Run and rolled damage on my Triple Laser Turret and Dorsal Turret, but shields on the Shadow Caster. If it rolled any damage, especially ranged damage, I would have won, but them's the breaks.

GG, Kevin!

Game 2:

Played against this great guy named Carlos running a Poe Dameron - More Than A Pilot/Lando Calrissian - Smooth and Sophisticated hero vehicle deck. I was almost out of this game, but had an incredible comeback.

Round one was a bit of a push. I sniped his Millennium Falcon with Scurffy, and then I healed 4 damage with First Aid. So neither of us had any damage, but I also then couldn't afford to play my Caster, so neither of us had any vehicles. Round two, he immediately Power Actions out the falcon for 4, attaches escape craft, activates it and gives it ambush.

A few turns later, Poe is at 5 health, Lando at 3. I use the combo I teched in specifically for this matchup. I play Attack Run, and, with my ambush action, I play a Dogfight, exhausting his falcon and readying my caster. Hit 6 on the caster to kill Poe. Then roll out and hit the 5 indirect to kill Lando. 11 damage in the course of three or four actions to steal the win.

Game 3:

Lando2/Yoda/DD

I had not tested against this deck, but I knew it was scary. But this shows the power of my deck against vehicle hate. I got my Caster round 1. He immediately plays the N-1 Starfighter and Rolls the special. Because I hadn't activated yet, I had the resources to play the Shield Generator. Round 2, I draw a second shield gen. He pops the special both times, but that meant that his three resources he spent round one combined to deal no damage to me.

That's the real downside of playing the vehicle hate on the board (supports or upgrades). You spend your resources into stopping me instead of killing me, while I've only spent resources on killing you.

He plays Planned Explosion two times, meanwhile I control the N1 die 2 more times. Then, I kill Yoda and fight through second chance to kill Lando with a reset.

2-1

Game 4:

Played against the eventual champion running his Snoke - Supreme Leader/Tarkin - Grand Moff deck. I wish I had the opportunity to test against this deck.

I was incredibly flustered during this match. I sat down to realize that I forgot my tokens in the car after the lunch break. So I sprint downstairs to the car and come back, and by that time my mental state is way off. I play Scruffy Looking Nerf-Herder to try to snipe the Vader's Fist, not realizing that he won't easily be able to play the fist without Chance Cube. I should have called upgrade and didn't.

But THEN, I had the misplay of the tournament. Because I was flustered, I paid no attention to his round-one Mind Probe. I had four cards in my hand, enough money to play the Caster, but I put four indirect damage onto L3 and he had the Mind Probe Special. I don't see it. Instead of playing the Caster, I activate a rebel engineer. He kills L3, and with no vehicle to attach her to, she just dies, and I follow shortly after.

L

2-2

Game 5:

I played against the Aayla Secura - Jedi General/Kit Fisto - Shii-cho Master deck. It wasn't the most savvy meta call, for sure (Blue hero has just not been performing at the higher levels), but he did mulligan for the EMP Grenades and throws that down on Kit first thing but doesn't activate him. He later plays the force speed on Aayla and activates her getting the speed special. Because I know he use the speed to activate Kit and kill my vehicle, then and only then do I play my Shield Generator.

Game was over a few rounds later.

Game 6:

Vader/Greedo

I've played and beat this deck five or six times in testing and in local tourneys, and I mean this exact deck and player - she is also from our Bellingham Group. This time, the odds were not in my favor.

In three rounds of double engineer activation, I pulled one mod. My first two rounds consisted of playing my Caster with no mods. Round 2, I drew a triple laser turret but pulled no mods with my rebels. I was able to keep my engineer alive with a good mitigation suite. Round three, I naturally draw two dorsal turrets, get an R2 with one Rebel, no mitgation. Finally a fully loaded shadow caster.

Meanwhile, Vader rolled seven damage round one when I didn't have mitigation, played Friends in High Places into a Darksaber. Round three another friends in high netted her a Vader's Fist that sealed the deal.

Rough sledding over all

L

Round 7:

Vader Greedo

I actually got some mods. Got a clutch reset round three. Also had a sweet Blaze of Glory play to overkill L3 by seven damage. Crushed Vader then reset to kill Greedo

W

Overall: 4-3. As I said, I think this deck has the stuff to compete at the high levels, and if you're afraid of running this deck because of the vehicle hate. That's the wrong reason. I scrubbed out because I was a bad player, not because they blew up my Caster. Don't be afraid!

Have you considered Reckless Reentry or Salvo?

Dice of Failure 822

@Hessian Sack I am not sure how I didn't see Reckless Reentry before. That card is awesome with the caster! Essentially a soft-reset. I'll definitely try it out.

As for Salvo, my deck has a 2-cost rule. That is to say: I have to ask myself about any 2-cost card "Is it better than a reset?" because two resources is what it costs to reset with the R2 Astromech.

With Salvo, I don't think it is. Would I rather deal six damage to (usually) two characters? That's a total of 12 damage, and it's hard to pass up. But, I could deal more damage than that with a reset. More than that, the six damage to everyone could overkill, whereas the reset could let me be more precise. I'd certainly try it out, I'm just not convinced it's better than a reset.

But I'll definitely try out Reckless Reentry! Thanks for the suggestion!
